You may have come across an error message saying that 3 terabytes of FAT32. As it turns out, there are several ways to solve this problem, so we’ll discuss them in a moment. The maximum file size that can be bound to a FAT32 volume is 4 GB.

    3 terabyte fat32

I would love to use a different file system (exFAT, NTFS, etc.) but I need my external hard drive to be readable on multiple devices, including eligible Amazon Fire TVs, Android phones/tablets and hopefully iOS. (although the device, the latter is undoubtedly less problematic if it does not work). From everything and everyone I’ve read, the ONLY file application that can be read by them is FAT32. I have tried some options like NTFS and even monthly premium apps on my android phone/tablet. I was able to mount any drive but nothing is readable. I’m just adding this information, but I know that FAT32 is not really the best option and people are really right in pointing it out, but unfortunately that’s the only tactic I have in this case.

I also know that while 2TB should always be the maximum for FAT32, several people have managed to get around this problem. If needed, I can share links to one discussion post on this issue. But what do theyBut nobody seems to have anything in common, so how exactly do you do it? Should I change the sector size of your hard drive? I’ve just tried a few different programs including AOMEI Partition Assistant, EaseUS Partition Master and MiniTool Partition Wizard which are obviously made by Windows (to no avail) and one or two people whose names are currently eluding me and although most of these advertise that they can handle FAT32 partitions larger than 2TB. I can’t find any information on how they are actually used to achieve this. Can GParted do this without problems? Is there any future program that can do this? Can anyone tell me what I need to choose to achieve this? I know that I need GPT, not MBR, but I don’t know of any other solution.

Thanks in advance! I really know any tricks or tips you can share! Be careful!! 🙂

  • I have a 4TB GPT USB external hard drive that I need to format to FAT32. (Yes, I know there are much better file systems out there; I need FAT32.) I have several other 4TB external drives already formatted in FAT32 (see attached image), but I can’t remember which program I chose for this. Lately research has been extremely useless. Google is just quoting a group of people who say FAT32 can never exceed 2TB, which is clearly not true.

I’ve tried Windows format command operation, Ridgecorp’s guiformat, Acronis True Image, AOMEI Partition Assistant, EaseUS Partition Master, and MiniTool Partition Wizard, but they all limit FAT32 volumes to 2TB (despite what some of them claim that can create big numbers on their sites).

Does anyone know of a really good application that can create a new 4TB FAT32 volume?

    Can you format a 3TB to FAT32?

But if you have a 3TB NTFS hard drive, you might be wondering if it’s FAT32 compatible. In fact, FAT32 supports a disk of no more than 2TB, but available to format a 3TB hard disk to FAT32, you can create two or more partitions of less than 2TB and o format them to the FAT32 file system.

  • If you want to run FAT32 on a 4TB drive, which I don’t recommend, you need to initialize the drive as GPT first and then partition and format it as FAT32. Some third-party partition managers can convert MBR to GPT on data drives without data loss, but you should always back up all data on the drive.

Can you format a 4TB hard drive to FAT32?

If you need FAT32 on a 4TB drive, which I don’t really like, you need to initialize someone’s hard drive as GPT first and then format it to FAT32 on top of that. Some third-party groups or unique partition managers can convert MBR to GPT on disk without losing personal data, but you still need to dump all data along the way in time.

MBR partition tables are only 2 TB in size. That’s why you see the 2TB limit for FAT32.

  • According to this site (and some others), the maximum size of a FAT32 partition is 2TB, so you should create two partitions.

  • Some large USB drives may have a feature in the controller that “converts” the disk sector size to support 4096 bytes (instead of 512). This increases the 32-bit address space by a factor of 8, increasing the exte limitnta for MBR drives up to 16TB (instead of 2 and TB) will probably do the same for getting FAT32 partitions (I never intended). The advantage is definitely that it can be used with experienced operating systems that don’t work with GPT, such as XP. The downside is that compatibility with some programs, such as Windows 7 backup, does not work with a disk with 4K sectors.

    Does FAT32 support 2TB?

“Can’t format 2TB Hardrun to FAT32 on Windows” I know NTFS is for Windows only and FAT32 works on both Windows and Mac. The most obvious benefit of FAT32 is its buggy nature: almost all major operating systems support it, and most devices support it. Therefore, some users want to format their drive to FAT32.
